Grand theft in the Round 7 slot: the Ravens steal Devonshire and grade out a C-. The Ravens spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: M.J. Devonshire, the No. 192 name on the board, in pick No. 228.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Hit on Chop Robinson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Kamari Lassiter
Kamari Lassiter is a better player than pick 55 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick62
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
A safety of that caliber at No. 62 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick93
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
They paid sticker price for Blake Fisher in the 113th pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122
Rnd4
Maason Smith
Maason Smith at slot 122 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 130 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick165
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke McCaffrey in the 165th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick218
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs in Round 6, Pick 43 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick228
Rnd7
M.J. Devonshire
M.J. Devonshire in pick 228 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick250
Rnd7
Evan Williams
You do not let a safety like Evan Williams reach slot 250 and blink. They did not. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick256
Rnd7
Nathan Thomas
Nathan Thomas at the 256th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick257
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
They took Sam Hartman at par in pick No. 257, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
