Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureB-
The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Nazir Stackhouse at pick No. 185 is 22 spots clear of where he belonged.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at No. 38 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in slot 69, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick84
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in the 84th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick106
Rnd4
Tory Horton
Tory Horton at the 106th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
No edge and no loss on Trevor Etienne in pick 144; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick157
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
A tidy little value on Andres Borregales in the 157th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick185
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
A wild overpay on Nazir Stackhouse in No. 185, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
Good price on R.J. Mickens in pick No. 217, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick235
Rnd7
Shemar James
They paid sticker price for Shemar James in slot 235, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick238
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
They liked Thomas Fidone II enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
