Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB+ FutureC+
Grand theft in the 251st overall pick: the 49ers steal Gore Jr. and grade out a B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Frank Gore Jr., the No. 228 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 251. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The cost of the McCaffrey reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In slot 21 they get an anchor for the defensive front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick66 Rnd3 T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa slid further than he should have, and the 66th overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Cade Stover at the 94th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick124 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Javon Foster at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
They will replay Cedric Gray at pick No. 131 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick133 Rnd4 Isaac Guerendo
Nothing to complain about; Isaac Guerendo went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in No. 138, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dwight McGlothern at Round 6, Pick 1 is the proof. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick215 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III is a better player than No. 215 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick251 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 251st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
