Draft Grade — Browns
Overall

FutureB-
A franchise passer in Ward headlines a C weekend for the Browns. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Browns took Jamaree Caldwell a full 89 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mondon Jr.. They have staked the next five years on Cam Ward, which is the only story that really matters here.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
If Cam Ward and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In pick No. 2 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Quinshon Judkins
They talked themselves into Quinshon Judkins at the 33rd pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick42
Rnd2
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at pick 42 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick102
Rnd4
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson at the 102nd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick163
Rnd5
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in No. 163 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick168
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 168 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick186
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the 186th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190
Rnd6
Jamaree Caldwell
A wild overpay on Jamaree Caldwell in the 190th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick194
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
A reach on DJ Campbell in No. 194; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Pick198
Rnd6
Max Brosmer
Max Brosmer at pick No. 198 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick209
Rnd6
Ja'Quinden Jackson
Ja'Quinden Jackson in slot 209 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick214
Rnd6
Elijah Arroyo
A tight end of that caliber at pick 214 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
A big swing on Tyler Batty at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jonas Sanker
They barely believed it either: Jonas Sanker still on the board at Round 7, Pick 12. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick244
Rnd7
Terrance Ferguson
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Terrance Ferguson in slot 244, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick256
Rnd7
Deion Burks
Deion Burks at the 256th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
