TarHeelRedskin DRAFTING FOR THECommanders

Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
C+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesD-
FutureB-
The Commanders lost the trade table, and the C+ tells the story. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback, running back and other spots went begging.
Every board in the league had Gray lower, and that gap is the story. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In No. 6 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
Good price on JT Tuimoloau in slot 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick40
Rnd2
Devontez Walker
They paid sticker price for Devontez Walker in pick No. 40, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick47
Rnd2
Denzel Burke
They took Denzel Burke at par in the 47th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick100
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at the 100th pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick102
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cedric Gray adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback, running back and other spots untouched.
Pick141
Rnd5
Theo Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Theo Johnson at Round 5, Pick 5 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick181
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at the 181st pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick223
Rnd7
Fentrell Cypress II
A premium they did not need to pay, Fentrell Cypress II a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
