Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesA FutureB-
Manning is the plan now, and the Patriots grade out a B+.

You build a draft on nights like this. Evan Tengesdahl had no business being available in slot 182, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.

They have staked the next five years on Arch Manning, which is the only story that really matters here. They are betting Thompson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Arch Manning
In pick 13 they get their quarterback of the future, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick45 Rnd2 Boubacar Traore
Boubacar Traore in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75 Rnd3 Bryant Wesco Jr.
Somehow Bryant Wesco Jr. was still sitting there in No. 75, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick112 Rnd4 Peter Clarke
Peter Clarke at the 112th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain at slot 113 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick160 Rnd5 Antwan Raymond
Antwan Raymond in the 160th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
Pick182 Rnd6 Evan Tengesdahl
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 182 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick190 Rnd6 Jalen Thompson
They jumped the gun on Jalen Thompson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick195 Rnd6 Jacob Ponton
Jacob Ponton at pick No. 195 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick212 Rnd6 Eric Singleton Jr.
Eric Singleton Jr. at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick250 Rnd7 Stephiylan Green
Stephiylan Green in slot 250 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick257 Rnd7 Braylan Shelby
A straight-up fair deal on Braylan Shelby at pick No. 257, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
