The 49ers jumped the board for Gargiulo and paid for it: F. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the 49ers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A F, plain and simple.
They will need Gargiulo to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The Wallace pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In No. 10 they get a go-to option on the outside, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick21
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
They jumped the gun on Tyler Guyton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick31
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick 31 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick63
Rnd2
Cade Stover
Cade Stover at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the 94th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
They talked themselves into Justin Eboigbe at slot 131, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick133
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in the 133rd overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick149
Rnd5
Sataoa Laumea
Circle this one: Sataoa Laumea at pick No. 149 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Tykee Smith
A tidy bit of business in the 176th overall pick, where Tykee Smith graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick211
Rnd6
Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon at pick No. 211 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Nice patience on Jaylan Ford, who had no business lasting to the 215th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237
Rnd7
Caedan Wallace
They will replay Caedan Wallace at slot 237 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick251
Rnd7
Nick Gargiulo
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nick Gargiulo this early at pick 251. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
