ther1 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. There is reaching, and then there is Sai'vion Jones at slot 100. The 49ers jumped the board by 125 and dared it to prove them wrong. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Lawson. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In the 15th overall pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick46
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow at No. 46 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick77
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
They reached into another round for Luke Kandra, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100
Rnd3
Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones in pick No. 100 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick113
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at pick 113 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Deontae Lawson
The board fumbled Deontae Lawson all the way to Round 4, Pick 36, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick190
Rnd6
Thor Griffith
A wild overpay on Thor Griffith in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
