ther1 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 105 spots for Akheem Mesidor, and value like that does not grow back. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Hancock at that price is a win they earned. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
They took James Pearce Jr. at par in the 11th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant slipping to the 43rd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at No. 75 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick100
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
They paid up for Luke Kandra at slot 100 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick112
Rnd4
Logan Brown
They talked themselves into Logan Brown at pick 112, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick137
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 137 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick186
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
A big swing on Davison Igbinosun at Round 6, Pick 11, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick226
Rnd7
Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor at No. 226 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock at the 230th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Shilo Sanders at the Round 7 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick254
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J.J. Weaver well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
