FutureB
The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B. The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Jaishawn Barham, the 254th pick, roughly 48 picks past where he belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B.
If Griffith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In pick 14 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant slid further than he should have, and No. 43 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at Round 3, Pick 11 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jack Nelson
They reached a country mile for Jack Nelson at the 94th pick, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100
Rnd3
Daylen Everette
A big swing on Daylen Everette at slot 100, well ahead of any board in the building. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick116
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at pick No. 116 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick137
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick161
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A real head-scratcher, JJ Pegues in No. 161 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick226
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Thor Griffith well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
Steal is underselling it; Jordan Hancock at pick 230 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick232
Rnd7
Xavier Nwankpa
Circle this one: Xavier Nwankpa at the 232nd pick is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
They robbed the room for Jared Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Trey Wedig
Trey Wedig in slot 249 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham in pick 254 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
