Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Mafah: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Phil Mafah had no business being available in pick 249, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

They will need Colby to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Armand Membou
In pick 11 they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
They will replay Colston Loveland at slot 43 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75 Rnd3 Darien Porter
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick100 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
Fair-plus on Darius Alexander, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113 Rnd4 Tory Horton
Tory Horton in Round 4, Pick 11 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138 Rnd4 LeQuint Allen
No drama and no debate, LeQuint Allen went about where he belonged in the 138th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147 Rnd5 Tyler Shough
Good price on Tyler Shough in the 147th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick160 Rnd5 Connor Colby
They talked themselves into Connor Colby at pick No. 160, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick227 Rnd7 Alex Mastromanno
Alex Mastromanno in pick No. 227 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick249 Rnd7 Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah at pick 249 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252 Rnd7 Mac McWilliams
Mac McWilliams slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
