Draft Grade — Broncos
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB
McCarthy should have been long gone. The Broncos pounced, and earned a D. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Braelon Allen at the 121st overall pick is 34 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The McCarthy value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The roster is better shaped than it was, with linebacker chief among the fixes.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice at pick 43 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Junior Colson
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Xavier Worthy
Somehow Xavier Worthy was still sitting there in the 76th pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick79
Rnd3
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in pick 79 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick96
Rnd3
Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher at Round 3, Pick 33 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick109
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Fair-plus on Khyree Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jaden Hicks
A tidy little value on Jaden Hicks in No. 113, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick121
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the 121st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick124
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
They barely believed it either: Matt Goncalves still on the board at the Round 4 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick149
Rnd5
Keith Randolph Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Keith Randolph Jr. at the 149th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Jefferson in slot 155 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
AJ Barner
AJ Barner in the 189th pick is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick233
Rnd7
Myles Jones
Circle this one: Myles Jones at Round 7, Pick 13 is a fall that decides a draft. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick240
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
They went early on Eric Gentry in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick245
Rnd7
Troy Omeire
They reached a country mile for Troy Omeire at No. 245, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
