The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The McLachlan reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
