Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesD-
FutureA+
The Patriots bled value on every deal, hence the B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Xzavier Henderson; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 43 spots ahead at No. 238.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. On value alone, Brooks makes the weekend a net positive.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In the 12th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Josh Conerly Jr.
No drama and no debate, Josh Conerly Jr. went about where he belonged in slot 38. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick69
Rnd3
Kyle Kennard
By-the-book stuff, Kyle Kennard at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick77
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
A wild overpay on Zy Alexander in Round 3, Pick 13, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cody Simon
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cody Simon. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick144
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached into another round for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick149
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
A market-rate specialist, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Andres Borregales. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick217
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke Lachey in the Round 7 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick220
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks in the 220th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick238
Rnd7
Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson at slot 238 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
