The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D-. The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Jackson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back, quarterback and other spots. The Slaughter pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Neal.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Jake Slaughter
In the 28th pick they get a building block for the line, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Darrell Jackson Jr.
No drama and no debate, Darrell Jackson Jr. went about where he belonged in pick 59. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Julian Neal
A tidy bit of business in No. 92, where Julian Neal graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick93
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 29, with Malachi Fields worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Domani Jackson in the Round 4 slot leaves running back, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick127
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling in the 127th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick133
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at slot 133 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick139
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard in pick No. 139 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick168
Rnd5
Isaac Smith
A straight-up fair deal on Isaac Smith at pick No. 168, value and slot in agreement. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick172
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
Kevin Coleman Jr. at No. 172 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick241
Rnd7
Barion Brown
Barion Brown in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
