The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Singleton: B-. The board owed the 49ers one, and it paid up: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 102 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 190 like a gift left on the doorstep. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They are betting Griffith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
A clean, defensible pick in Round 1, Pick 15 with a little surplus value in Princely Umanmielen. The roster fit checks out.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant in pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick61
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick100
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
A conviction pick on Luke Kandra at slot 100 that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Ozzy Trapilo
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ozzy Trapilo in the 113th pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick130
Rnd4
Maxwell Hairston
They barely believed it either: Maxwell Hairston still on the board at the 130th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick137
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in No. 137 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick190
Rnd6
Nicholas Singleton
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to pick No. 190, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick220
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith in slot 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick233
Rnd7
Xavier Nwankpa
They robbed the room for Xavier Nwankpa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick249
Rnd7
Germie Bernard
They talked themselves into Germie Bernard at pick No. 249, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jared Wilson in pick 254, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
