FutureB-
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If Key pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The Sanders steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Ajani Cornelius
A straight-up fair deal on Ajani Cornelius at pick 59, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick63
Rnd2
Andrew Mukuba
By-the-book stuff, Andrew Mukuba at slot 63 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick95
Rnd3
T.J. Sanders
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing T.J. Sanders in No. 95. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick123
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and J.C. Davis at the 123rd pick is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick127
Rnd4
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild at the 127th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jonah Monheim
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jonah Monheim. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick187
Rnd6
Brant Kuithe
No edge and no loss on Brant Kuithe in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick191
Rnd6
Dane Key
Dane Key at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
No drama and no debate, Thor Griffith went about where he belonged in slot 223. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
