Draft Grade — 49ers

FutureB-
The 49ers bet the future on Ward. The board says D-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Jordan James; the 49ers did not wait, grabbing him 36 spots ahead at pick No. 254.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Everything downstream of Cam Ward depends on Cam Ward, and the building knows it.
They banked enough surplus on Fairchild to cover a lot of smaller sins. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In No. 11 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick20
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
Princely Umanmielen in the 20th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick26
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In slot 26 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick42
Rnd2
Wyatt Milum
No drama and no debate, Wyatt Milum went about where he belonged in the 42nd overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick73
Rnd3
Shavon Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. at Round 3, Pick 9 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick85
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick109
Rnd4
Tyler Warren
They paid sticker price for Tyler Warren in the 109th pick, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick117
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
No edge and no loss on Andrew Mukuba in Round 4, Pick 16; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jihaad Campbell
A straight-up fair deal on Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 125, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jack Bech
By-the-book stuff, Jack Bech at No. 138 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick145
Rnd5
Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick153
Rnd5
Gunnar Helm
They jumped the gun on Gunnar Helm, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick160
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley at slot 160 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick194
Rnd6
Tyler Baron
They did well to land Tyler Baron in pick 194, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick197
Rnd6
Garrett Dellinger
Garrett Dellinger at pick 197 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224
Rnd7
Elijhah Badger
A quiet steal in pick No. 224: Elijhah Badger for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick245
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
They liked Jack Kiser enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at Round 7, Pick 33 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick248
Rnd7
Jacobe Covington
A tidy little value on Jacobe Covington in the 248th overall pick, a step better than break-even. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick250
Rnd7
Akili Arnold
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Akili Arnold at the 250th pick is the proof. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jordan James
Value said wait; Jordan James in slot 254 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
