Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Barryn Sorrell went at the 228th overall pick, a good 84 picks before the board was ready. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Nelson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Will Johnson
In the 12th pick they get an island corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in slot 43 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick75 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba in Round 3, Pick 11 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick76 Rnd3 Dylan Sampson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dylan Sampson at pick No. 76. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick99 Rnd3 Smael Mondon Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Smael Mondon Jr. a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick112 Rnd4 Hollin Pierce
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Hollin Pierce. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138 Rnd4 Kaimon Rucker
No edge and no loss on Kaimon Rucker in No. 138; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick139 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in pick 139 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick148 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
A big swing on JJ Pegues at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick172 Rnd5 Chase Lundt
The board had Chase Lundt higher than the 172nd overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick189 Rnd6 Jack Nelson
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 189th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick228 Rnd7 Barryn Sorrell
This one needs a full-page explanation: Barryn Sorrell in slot 228, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jackson Hawes
Jackson Hawes at Round 7, Pick 14 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick255 Rnd7 Jalen Travis
Jalen Travis in pick No. 255 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
