Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureD
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Graham Mertz at pick No. 254, a reach of 57 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher went begging.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Gadsden II. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In slot 12 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick14 Rnd1 Tetairoa McMillan
In No. 14 they get a weapon on the perimeter, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick16 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In pick No. 16 they get a wrecking ball inside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach the 49th pick and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick55 Rnd2 Kamari Ramsey
Kamari Ramsey in Round 2, Pick 23 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick75 Rnd3 Darien Porter
Darien Porter at the 75th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick112 Rnd4 Mason Taylor
A slide stopped in the 112th overall pick, with Mason Taylor worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick118 Rnd4 Jake Majors
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick122 Rnd4 Azareye'h Thomas
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher to take Azareye'h Thomas, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick152 Rnd5 Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in pick 152 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186 Rnd6 Oronde Gadsden II
They robbed the room for Oronde Gadsden II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick249 Rnd7 Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson in slot 249 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick254 Rnd7 Graham Mertz
This one needs a full-page explanation: Graham Mertz in Round 7, Pick 38, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
