Draft Grade — 49ers

More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it.

There is reaching, and then there is Zion Logue at No. 210. The 49ers jumped the board by 40 and dared it to prove them wrong. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

The Trotter Jr. value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Tyler Guyton
In slot 32 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick64 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick95 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
They paid a round early for Khyree Jackson in the 95th pick, more than the board wanted. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick98 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 98th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Pick132 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 132 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick177 Rnd6 Christian Jones
Christian Jones at No. 177 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick210 Rnd6 Zion Logue
They talked themselves into Zion Logue at slot 210, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick213 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
Taking Jaylan Ford in pick No. 213 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215 Rnd6 Daequan Hardy
They liked Daequan Hardy enough to skip the value, taking him in the 215th overall pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick253 Rnd7 Jordan Whittington
Jordan Whittington in the 253rd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
