Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Dolphins bet the future on Mendoza. The board says D-.

There is reaching, and then there is Pat Coogan at the 218th overall pick. The Dolphins jumped the board by 30 and dared it to prove them wrong. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.

The Ponds pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Fernando Mendoza
They went early on Fernando Mendoza in the 4th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick34 Rnd2 A.J. Harris
A.J. Harris in slot 34 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick35 Rnd2 Caleb Lomu
Caleb Lomu at No. 35 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick37 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
They liked Olaivavega Ioane enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 37. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick47 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt at Round 2, Pick 15 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick68 Rnd3 Dillon Thieneman
They let Dillon Thieneman come to them and pounced at the 68th pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick75 Rnd3 Drew Shelton
They talked themselves into Drew Shelton at slot 75, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick105 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
A want over a need in the 105th pick: D'Angelo Ponds adds a cornerback while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick144 Rnd5 Sammy Omosigho
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sammy Omosigho. The roster fit checks out.
Pick218 Rnd7 Pat Coogan
They reached into another round for Pat Coogan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
