Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
D-
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureD+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a D-. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Texans started one anyway for Samuel Brown, 70 picks ahead of schedule. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
Getting Sampson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Mukuba pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
In pick 31 they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick42
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in No. 42 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick56
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
They read the board right and Tyler Warren was the payoff at pick No. 56. The roster fit checks out.
Pick58
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Benjamin Morrison at the 58th pick is the proof. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick64
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
A linebacker of that caliber at the 64th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick79
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the 79th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick89
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
Steal is underselling it; Kaleb Johnson at Round 3, Pick 25 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick91
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Andrew Mukuba at safety with quarterback open.
Pick92
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Taking Demetrius Knight Jr. in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick95
Rnd3
Logan Brown
They left a pile of value on the table to take Logan Brown this early at pick 95. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson in No. 108 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125
Rnd4
Samuel Brown
They reached a country mile for Samuel Brown at slot 125, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
Value said wait; Jaeden Roberts in the 126th overall pick says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jared Wilson
They talked themselves into Jared Wilson at Round 5, Pick 28, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick241
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
A reach on Garrett Dellinger in the 241st pick; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
