Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueA- NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
Fitzgerald should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a C+.

Somebody in the 237th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

They are betting Griffith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

Hit on Kelvin Banks Jr. and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
In slot 11 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick53 Rnd2 T.J. Sanders
Nice patience on T.J. Sanders, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
Somehow Xavier Watts was still sitting there in the 75th pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick98 Rnd3 TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 98 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99 Rnd3 Demetrius Knight Jr.
You do not let a linebacker like Demetrius Knight Jr. reach Round 3, Pick 35 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick112 Rnd4 Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm at the 112th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick120 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
The board fumbled Dylan Fairchild all the way to pick 120, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick135 Rnd4 Savion Williams
Savion Williams in No. 135 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jake Majors
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Majors in Round 4, Pick 37, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick139 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
They robbed the room for Jared Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick189 Rnd6 Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings at slot 189 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick228 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith in the 228th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick232 Rnd7 Brant Kuithe
A quiet steal in pick No. 232: Brant Kuithe for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick237 Rnd7 Ryan Fitzgerald
They will replay Ryan Fitzgerald at the 237th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick255 Rnd7 James Burnip
James Burnip at No. 255 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
