FutureA+
The 49ers let Neal fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. When a board-topper like Devin Neal slides to the Round 6 slot, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
Every board in the league had Batty lower, and that gap is the story. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick Analysis
Pick46
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at the Round 2 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick97
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
Steal is underselling it; Gunnar Helm at the 97th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jake Majors
A tidy little value on Jake Majors in pick No. 100, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick112
Rnd4
Luke Kandra
A clean, defensible pick in slot 112 with a little surplus value in Luke Kandra. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick137
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at Round 4, Pick 36 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick152
Rnd5
Chris Paul Jr.
They robbed the room for Chris Paul Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick170
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 170th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick171
Rnd5
Joshua Gray
Joshua Gray at No. 171 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186
Rnd6
Devin Neal
Taking Devin Neal in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at No. 224 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick229
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at pick No. 229, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick231
Rnd7
Tyler Batty
Value said wait; Tyler Batty in the 231st overall pick says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jonah Monheim
Circle this one: Jonah Monheim at Round 7, Pick 32 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Micah Morris
They went early on Micah Morris in the 249th pick, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
The board fumbled Jack Kiser all the way to slot 254, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
