Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedC+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Steelers a B-. The board owed the Steelers one, and it paid up: Max Melton, the No. 63 name on the board, sitting there at the 84th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Every board in the league had Eichenberg lower, and that gap is the story. The Frazier pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Amarius Mims. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick51
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
A curious use of the 51st overall pick. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Zach Frazier did not.
Pick84
Rnd3
Max Melton
Steal is underselling it; Max Melton at pick No. 84 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick120
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
You do not let a wide receiver like Jalen McMillan reach No. 120 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
A real head-scratcher, Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 21 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick197
Rnd6
M.J. Devonshire
Value with a capital V on M.J. Devonshire in the 197th pick, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jaden Crumedy
Jaden Crumedy slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the DT-EDGE. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
