Draft Grade — Steelers

The Steelers let Melton fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Max Melton had no business being available in the 123rd pick, and the Steelers did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

The Carter pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Fautanu pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots.

Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 JC Latham
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get protection for the quarterback. Need was not the driver here.
Pick55 Rnd2 Barrett Carter
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barrett Carter. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick87 Rnd3 Jack Sawyer
A edge rusher of that caliber at No. 87 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113 Rnd4 Troy Fautanu
A surprising call. With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 113 on Troy Fautanu, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick123 Rnd4 Max Melton
They will replay Max Melton at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick201 Rnd6 Bryce Foster
Value with a capital V on Bryce Foster in the 201st overall pick, a genuine coup. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick244 Rnd7 Will Sheppard
Will Sheppard in slot 244 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
