The Steelers checked most of the boxes and earned a B. Every other box got a look, but interior defensive lineman did not. The Steelers will head to camp with the same hole they walked in with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Every board in the league had Watson lower, and that gap is the story. On value alone, Colson makes the weekend a net positive.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. Need was not the driver here.
Pick56
Rnd2
Josh Newton
Josh Newton in pick No. 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick85
Rnd3
Junior Colson
Junior Colson is a better player than No. 85 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
They took Tommy Eichenberg at par in the 120th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan Travis in the 135th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick199
Rnd6
Blake Watson
Blake Watson in pick 199 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick242
Rnd7
Mark Perry
Mark Perry in slot 242 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick246
Rnd7
Chad Lindberg
They paid sticker price for Chad Lindberg in Round 7, Pick 26, and that is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jordan Johnson
Jordan Johnson at pick 247 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
