FutureD+
The Steelers found their guy under center in Maye: D-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Steelers took McKinnley Jackson a full 37 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Shipley value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In pick 6 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick54
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at slot 54 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick84
Rnd3
McKinnley Jackson
They talked themselves into McKinnley Jackson at the 84th pick, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick120
Rnd4
James Williams
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick121
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 21, where Matt Goncalves graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick135
Rnd4
Will Shipley
Will Shipley at the 135th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick197
Rnd6
Drake Nugent
No drama and no debate, Drake Nugent went about where he belonged in the 197th pick. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick238
Rnd7
Logan Lee
Logan Lee at the 238th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
