The Steelers landed square in the muddy middle: C+. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Steelers started one anyway for Tyler Owens, 31 picks ahead of schedule. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
With interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Liufau falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside. A real need, handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They let Edgerrin Cooper come to them and pounced at the 51st pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick84
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sedrick Van Pran in pick 84. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick120
Rnd4
Christian Jones
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Christian Jones while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
Pick121
Rnd4
Andru Phillips
Good price on Andru Phillips in No. 121, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick158
Rnd5
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis at the 158th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick172
Rnd5
Marist Liufau
Circle this one: Marist Liufau at pick 172 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick197
Rnd6
Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens at the 197th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
A premium they did not need to pay, Jordan Whittington a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
