The Steelers lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Steelers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The McKinstry pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The Thomas Jr. pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the 15th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
In No. 20 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick33
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. slid further than he should have, and slot 33 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick34
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on J.J. McCarthy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
