Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
D
ValueC
NeedB-

FutureB-
The Steelers bled value on every deal, hence the D. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Frank Gore Jr. at slot 195, a reach of 30 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots went begging.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Value said wait; Zach Frazier in No. 33 says they were not listening. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick98
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
By-the-book stuff, Caelen Carson at pick 98 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick119
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Roger Rosengarten while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots sat open.
Pick166
Rnd5
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in pick No. 166 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick178
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at the 178th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick195
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They reached into another round for Frank Gore Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
