BisTabi DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers

Grand theft in No. 227: the 49ers steal Lambert-Smith and grade out a B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how KeAndre Lambert-Smith got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at the 227th overall pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They are betting Zabel proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In the 11th overall pick they get a building block for the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Josaiah Stewart
A reach for Josaiah Stewart in the 43rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick75
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Nothing to complain about; Carson Schwesinger went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
Fair-plus on Zy Alexander, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips in No. 113 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jonas Sanker
A tidy little value on Jonas Sanker in slot 138, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick147
Rnd5
Kurtis Rourke
Kurtis Rourke at pick No. 147 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick160
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
A clean, defensible pick in Round 5, Pick 22 with a little surplus value in Andres Borregales. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick227
Rnd7
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
The board fumbled KeAndre Lambert-Smith all the way to Round 7, Pick 11, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Corey Kiner
Nice patience on Corey Kiner, who had no business lasting to slot 249. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick252
Rnd7
Alex Mastromanno
Alex Mastromanno at the 252nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
