Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Bears left with their quarterback, and a D- to match. Somebody took the Bears to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They will answer for taking defensive back early while running back, cornerback and other spots went begging.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The Van Pran pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
However the rest shakes out, Muhammad III at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In No. 2 they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick5
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick21
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick37
Rnd2
Johnny Wilson
A slide stopped in pick 37, with Johnny Wilson worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick54
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 54 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick68
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III at the 68th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick104
Rnd4
Max Melton
A surprising call. With running back, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent slot 104 on Max Melton, a defensive back they were not short of.
Pick105
Rnd4
Shilo Sanders
They liked Shilo Sanders enough to skip the value, taking him in the 105th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick132
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick141
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at pick 141 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick142
Rnd5
Darius Robinson
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick182
Rnd6
Moose Muhammad III
Moose Muhammad III is a better player than pick No. 182 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick225
Rnd7
Tyler Batty
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Batty at No. 225, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
