Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureB-
The Bengals cashed the board's mistake on Dixon: B+.

You build a draft on nights like this. Johnny Dixon had no business being available in the 235th overall pick, and the Bengals did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

The Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The phones were where this weekend was really won.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In pick 18 they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick26 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
A reasonable price with a little left over, Amarius Mims in the 26th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick49 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
By-the-book stuff, T.J. Tampa at the 49th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick80 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
They paid sticker price for Michael Hall Jr. in Round 3, Pick 16, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright in pick No. 86 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick91 Rnd3 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at slot 91 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick116 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Zak Zinter for less than the market said. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick126 Rnd4 Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at No. 126 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick148 Rnd5 Christian Jones
They read the board right and Christian Jones was the payoff at No. 148. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick175 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke McCaffrey in slot 175. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick196 Rnd6 Steele Chambers
Steele Chambers at Round 6, Pick 21 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. The roster fit checks out.
Pick235 Rnd7 Johnny Dixon
Taking Johnny Dixon in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick252 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Owens at pick 252 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
