Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bengals to a D.

There is reaching, and then there is McKade Mettauer at the Round 7 slot. The Bengals jumped the board by 53 and dared it to prove them wrong. It grades a D, and the process earned it.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They punted on linebacker, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Thomas Jr. value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
In the 18th overall pick they get a red-zone target to build around, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick25 Rnd1 Tyler Guyton
In the 25th pick they get a cornerstone up front, even if it was a touch early.
Pick49 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 49 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick80 Rnd3 T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at Round 3, Pick 16 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick91 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick116 Rnd4 DJ James
DJ James at slot 116 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick148 Rnd5 James Williams
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing James Williams in pick No. 148. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick175 Rnd5 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
They paid sticker price for Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the 175th pick, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick196 Rnd6 Braiden McGregor
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braiden McGregor. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick235 Rnd7 Jase McClellan
A clean, defensible pick in the 235th overall pick with a little surplus value in Jase McClellan. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick252 Rnd7 McKade Mettauer
McKade Mettauer in Round 7, Pick 32 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
