Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: C+.

The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Hit on Edgerrin Cooper and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick63 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Good price on Edgerrin Cooper in the 63rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick94 Rnd3 McKinnley Jackson
A reasonable price with a little left over, McKinnley Jackson in pick 94. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98 Rnd3 Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith at the 98th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick115 Rnd4 Dillon Johnson
They took Dillon Johnson at par in pick No. 115, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick124 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Javon Foster in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131 Rnd4 James Williams
A curious use of No. 131. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
