Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesB- FutureB
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jared Wiley, 77 picks early at Round 6, Pick 40. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Wilson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Maason Smith
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at offensive lineman, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Pick58 Rnd2 Donovan Edwards
No drama and no debate, Donovan Edwards went about where he belonged in pick No. 58. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90 Rnd3 Spencer Rattler
They paid sticker price for Spencer Rattler in the 90th pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick100 Rnd3 Smael Mondon Jr.
Fair-plus on Smael Mondon Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick126 Rnd4 Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson slipping to No. 126 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick204 Rnd6 Trey Knox
No edge and no loss on Trey Knox in slot 204; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick209 Rnd6 Arik Gilbert
They left a pile of value on the table to take Arik Gilbert this early at the 209th pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick213 Rnd6 Gavin Bartholomew
They talked themselves into Gavin Bartholomew at the 213th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at slot 215, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jake Briningstool
Jake Briningstool at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
