Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B+
ValueA NeedB+ TradesB FutureB-
Larceny in No. 140 lands the Texans a B+, Carter and all.

You could see the war room lean forward. Barrett Carter at Round 5, Pick 2 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

They are betting Presley proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a workhorse for the backfield at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick57 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick89 Rnd3 Jake Majors
Jake Majors at the 89th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick97 Rnd3 Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm in slot 97 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick126 Rnd4 Deontae Lawson
Taking Deontae Lawson in the 126th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick140 Rnd5 Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter in No. 140 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick164 Rnd5 Connor Colby
They liked Connor Colby enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick241 Rnd7 Brennan Presley
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brennan Presley in pick 241, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
