SD DRAFTING FOR THETexans

Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B

FutureB-
The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Texans to leave a draft. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The cost of the Thornton Jr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Nice patience on Kaleb Johnson, who had no business lasting to No. 58. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick79
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in pick No. 79 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild at the 89th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick166
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 5, Pick 28 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick236
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jabbar Muhammad. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick241
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa slid further than he should have, and pick 241 is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
