Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

TradesA+
FutureA+
The Texans won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-. Whoever sat across the table from the Texans should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Every board in the league had Allen lower, and that gap is the story.
It is not that Phillips is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first.
Bottom line, with Roman Wilson leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick44
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in pick No. 44 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick46
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in slot 46, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick49
Rnd2
Mike Sainristil
No edge and no loss on Mike Sainristil in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick51
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
Javon Bullard in Round 2, Pick 19 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick60
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
They let Xavier Legette come to them and pounced at pick 60. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick65
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
No drama and no debate, Kingsley Suamataia went about where he belonged in No. 65. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Hall Jr. at the 69th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick77
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Andru Phillips while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick87
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
A want over a need in slot 87: Calen Bullock adds a safety while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick89
Rnd3
Ray Davis
They paid sticker price for Ray Davis in the 89th overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90
Rnd3
Roger Rosengarten
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick91
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
They went early on Christian Mahogany in No. 91, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick92
Rnd3
Theo Johnson
They liked Theo Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 92. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick97
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick98
Rnd3
Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
Jalyx Hunt in Round 4, Pick 13 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick178
Rnd6
Jaheim Bell
By-the-book stuff, Jaheim Bell at pick No. 178 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
