Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureD-
The Williams reach set a tone the 49ers could not shake: F.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A F, plain and simple.

They will answer for taking cornerback early while running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. The Williams pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Branch pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left running back open, and the grade is the bill.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Avieon Terrell
In No. 27 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick28 Rnd1 Caleb Lomu
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at pick 58 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick92 Rnd3 Daylen Everette
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Daylen Everette in Round 3, Pick 28 leaves running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick93 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
They paid sticker price for Harold Perkins Jr. in slot 93, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham in pick No. 106 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick127 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch in the 127th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick128 Rnd4 CJ Daniels
No edge and no loss on CJ Daniels in the 128th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133 Rnd4 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
No drama and no debate, Ar'maj Reed-Adams went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jakobe Thomas
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 38, where Jakobe Thomas graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick165 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at No. 165 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick167 Rnd5 Oscar Delp
A straight-up fair deal on Oscar Delp at the 167th pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick171 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
Nothing to complain about; Xavier Nwankpa went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick205 Rnd6 PJ Williams
PJ Williams in the 205th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
