FutureA+
The Commanders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Jaheim Bell a full 72 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
Getting Green where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Drake Maye
They took Drake Maye at par in slot 5, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick37
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu slipping to pick 37 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in the 40th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at the 67th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell at pick No. 69 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
No edge and no loss on Dominick Puni in Round 4, Pick 1; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick103
Rnd4
Malachi Corley
Circle this one: Malachi Corley at the 103rd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138
Rnd5
Max Melton
Max Melton at the 138th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick181
Rnd6
Renardo Green
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Renardo Green in Round 6, Pick 6, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick220
Rnd6
Michael Wiley
They will replay Michael Wiley at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jordan Magee
Jordan Magee at No. 241 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
