FutureA+
McKinstry should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a A. You could see the war room lean forward. Kool-Aid McKinstry at pick 103 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Abrams-Draine pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Sauce Gardner leading the way.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In slot 9 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick18
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Brock Bowers
Brock Bowers in pick No. 43 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick103
Rnd4
Kool-Aid McKinstry
You do not let a cornerback like Kool-Aid McKinstry reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick112
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Kris Abrams-Draine while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jaden Hicks
The board fumbled Jaden Hicks all the way to the 138th overall pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick148
Rnd5
Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk in No. 148 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick177
Rnd6
Javon Foster
Taking Javon Foster in pick 177 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick180
Rnd6
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten in the 180th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick216
Rnd6
Delmar Glaze
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Delmar Glaze in slot 216, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
