The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Simon: D.

The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Joey Slackman, 58 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. A D that will need time and luck to look better.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Simon. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick19 Rnd1 Mason Graham
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick32 Rnd1 Shavon Revel Jr.
In the 32nd overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick53 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
A tidy bit of business in the 53rd pick, where Tyler Booker graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick77 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
Taking Jihaad Campbell in Round 3, Pick 13 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick100 Rnd3 Logan Brown
Logan Brown at pick 100 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at pick No. 113 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick137 Rnd4 Jayden Higgins
They took Jayden Higgins at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick190 Rnd6 Nicholas Singleton
They will replay Nicholas Singleton at the 190th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220 Rnd7 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at No. 220 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick233 Rnd7 Joey Slackman
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Joey Slackman well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick249 Rnd7 Terrance Ferguson
Circle this one: Terrance Ferguson at the 249th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick254 Rnd7 Jared Wilson
They barely believed it either: Jared Wilson still on the board at Round 7, Pick 40. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
