Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureA+
The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with J.J. Weaver in Round 7, Pick 24. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. On value alone, Lovett makes the weekend a net positive. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 23rd overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In the 24th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick29
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In pick 29 they get a building block for the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Pick87
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
They paid up for Khyree Jackson at pick No. 87 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick88
Rnd3
Michael Pratt
Value said wait; Michael Pratt in slot 88 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick91
Rnd3
Junior Colson
Junior Colson at No. 91 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick108
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132
Rnd4
Christian Jones
No edge and no loss on Christian Jones in the 132nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jalyx Hunt
Fair-plus on Jalyx Hunt, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick169
Rnd5
Dillon Johnson
Dillon Johnson at Round 5, Pick 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
A reach for Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 174; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick216
Rnd6
Ryan Watts
They reached into another round for Ryan Watts, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick230
Rnd7
Bub Means
They went early on Bub Means in pick No. 230, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick233
Rnd7
Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in pick 233 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick244
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
They left a pile of value on the table to take J.J. Weaver this early at slot 244. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
