Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall C
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Cowboys bled value on every deal, hence the C.

The Cowboys did not so much draft Eric Watts as overpay for him, 39 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. It is not that Cole is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick43 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
They let Tyler Guyton come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 11. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick56 Rnd2 Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright in the 56th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick68 Rnd3 Austin Booker
No edge and no loss on Austin Booker in No. 68; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick79 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick 79, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick87 Rnd3 Cole Bishop
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in the 87th overall pick, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick96 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick104 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
A slide stopped in slot 104, with Khyree Jackson worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick114 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. It fills a real need, too.
Pick128 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tommy Eichenberg in the 128th overall pick, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick133 Rnd4 Myles Cole
A want over a need in pick 133: Myles Cole adds an edge rusher while quarterback and tight end keeps waiting.
Pick144 Rnd5 Mason McCormick
A reach on Mason McCormick in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick153 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They did well to land Luke McCaffrey in No. 153, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick160 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
Dylan Laube in pick No. 160 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick174 Rnd5 Elijah Jones
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Elijah Jones in Round 5, Pick 38, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick180 Rnd6 Jha'Quan Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Jha'Quan Jackson a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick197 Rnd6 Jaden Crumedy
Jaden Crumedy at pick 197 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick200 Rnd6 Eric Watts
Eric Watts in slot 200 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
