Draft Grade — Vikings

FutureA
The Vikings kept it disciplined and banked a B. The Vikings did not so much draft Eric Gentry as overpay for him, 21 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Franklin.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In slot 21 they get a potential shutdown corner. More want than need.
Pick42
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
A straight-up fair deal on J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving at the 90th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick129
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
No drama and no debate, Tommy Eichenberg went about where he belonged in the 129th overall pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick148
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
They took Javion Cohen at par in Round 5, Pick 12, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick158
Rnd5
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers in pick 158 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson at the 160th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick168
Rnd5
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
A quiet steal in the 174th overall pick: Chau Smith-Wade for less than the market said. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell in pick No. 188 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick225
Rnd7
Brevyn Spann-Ford
No edge and no loss on Brevyn Spann-Ford in pick 225; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick230
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
They left a pile of value on the table to take Eric Gentry this early at Round 7, Pick 10. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick245
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
Zakhari Franklin at slot 245 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
