Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureC+
The Steelers let Gordon II fall into their laps, and walked away with a D+.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Steelers would have aced it. Jamaree Caldwell at slot 223 is 65 spots clear of where he belonged.

Getting Gordon II where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In pick No. 21 they get a home-run threat at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick35 Rnd2 Derrick Harmon
Nothing to complain about; Derrick Harmon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick52 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
They will replay Malaki Starks at pick 52 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick83 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
Steal is underselling it; Kaleb Johnson at Round 3, Pick 19 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick161 Rnd5 Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at the 161st pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jamaree Caldwell
A big swing on Jamaree Caldwell at pick No. 223, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick229 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
They paid a round early for Shilo Sanders in the 229th overall pick, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick245 Rnd7 Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in slot 245 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
