Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a A-.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Drew Kendall at pick No. 238 is 55 spots clear of where he belonged.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Rogers.

The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jalon Walker and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in No. 30 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick38 Rnd2 Colston Loveland
The board had Colston Loveland higher than slot 38, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick54 Rnd2 Jalen Royals
A premium they did not need to pay, Jalen Royals a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick77 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba in pick No. 77 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick106 Rnd4 Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander in the 106th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick144 Rnd5 LeQuint Allen
Fair-plus on LeQuint Allen, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick170 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 32 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick198 Rnd6 Ricky White III
They reached a country mile for Ricky White III at slot 198, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick199 Rnd6 Fadil Diggs
Fadil Diggs in No. 199 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick217 Rnd7 Caleb Rogers
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Caleb Rogers worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick220 Rnd7 Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith at the 220th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238 Rnd7 Drew Kendall
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Drew Kendall well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
